When children grow up in chronic fear—fear of punishment, abandonment, or not being “good enough”—their brains remain in survival mode with persistent fight/flight responses. The neural circuits in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) necessary for empathy, compassion, and moral reasoning cannot develop properly. Children remain capable of feeling their own pain but struggle to access genuine concern for others, often becoming stuck at what Lawrence Kohlberg called “conventional morality”—following rules to avoid punishment or gain approval rather than reaching higher stages of principled, compassionate action.
